A man accused of driving his car over five people sleeping on a footpath in Delhi's Vasant Vihar has been granted bail. The incident happened in the early morning hours of July 9. Delhi Police confirmed that the accused, 40-year-old Utsav Shekhar, was arrested but later released on bail.

Accident Near Munirka Flyover

The tragic event took place around 1:30 AM near the Munirka Flyover, opposite Shiva Camp. One of the victims, Sabami, shared that she and her family were sleeping on the footpath when a fast-moving white car suddenly ran over them. After the crash, the driver reportedly stopped for a moment, checked the injured people, and then sped away toward Shankar Vihar.

Luckily, a passerby witnessed the incident and gave Sabami the vehicle’s registration number, which she later handed over to the police. The vehicle has since been seized and is undergoing forensic examination.

Victims Speak Out

The crash left several people injured. Narayani, one of the victims, said she lost consciousness and suffered injuries to her chest and neck. Her husband and children were also hurt. Another victim, Ramchander, said the car hit them while they were sleeping. He added that his wife’s ear and ribs were injured. All the injured were taken to a hospital by the police.

Details About the Accused

According to authorities, Utsav Shekhar is a property dealer living in Dwarka. He was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol and had also collided with a truck after the initial accident. Police filed a case at the Vasant Vihar station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.

The injured—identified as Ladhi, Bimla, Sabami, Narayani, and Ramchander—are all residents of Rajasthan. Police have released a photo of the accused and continue their investigation.
